KVPY

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is an on-going National Program of Fellowships in Basic Sciences, initiated and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to attract exceptionally and highly motivated students for pursuing basic science courses and career in research.
The objectives of the program are to identify the students with talent and aptitude for research; help them realize their potential in their studies; encourage them to take up research careers in Science, and ensure the growth of the best scientific minds for research and development in the country.
The advertisement for the KVPY Fellowship appears in all the national dailies normally on the Technology Day the May 11 and Second Sunday of July every year.
The selection of students is from those studying in XI standard to 1st year of any undergraduate Program in Natural and Basic Sciences having aptitude for scientific research. There are special groups or committees set up at IISc, which screen the applications, conduct aptitude test at various centres. Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students are invited for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure. For receiving a fellowship, both aptitude test and interview are required.
Generous scholarships are provided up to the pre-Ph.D. level to the selected students.

KVPY Fellowship Award - 2012

Following is the provisional list of candidates in the order of merit, recommended for the Award of KVPY Fellowship – 2012. The merit list is based on the marks obtained by a Candidate: 75% of the marks in the Aptitude Test + 25% of the marks in the Interview.
All India Rank List – General Merit and cut off marks

• Stream - SA (65.0% and above)
• Stream – SA: Mentorship Scheme (60.0% and above)
• Stream - SB (56.0% and above)
• Stream - SX (56.0% and above)

All India Rank List under the Empowerment Initiative for SC/ST in the KVPY Fellowship Program and cut off marks:

• Stream - SA (42.0% and above)
• Stream - SB (31.0% and above)
• Stream - SX (41.0% and above)

The Award of KVPY Fellowship will be effective from 1st August 2013 and is subject to verification of the required documents.
All the candidates who appeared for the Aptitude Test can get their marks from the website by logging in with their application number and date of birth and this will be available in a short while from now.

FELLOWSHIPS

BASIC SCIENCES Monthly Fellowship Annual Contingency Grant SA (After X Class) Rs. 4000 Rs. 16000 SX /SB - during 1st to 3rd years of - B.Sc./B.S. /Integrated M.Sc. /M.S. Rs. 5000 Rs. 20000 SX /SB - during M. Sc. / 4th to 5th years of Integrated M.Sc. /M.S. Rs. 7000 Rs. 28000 Renewal/Continuation of fellowship Annual renewal of fellowships will depend on the KVPY Fellows maintaining a good academic performance of first class (60% marks) or equivalent grade point average in science subjects in each academic year in the first attempt. Repeaters or students who failed and passed or improved in the subsequent attempts will not be eligible to be considered for renewal of fellowship even if they fulfil the performance criteria in the subsequent attempts. In addition to the above, participation and satisfactory performance in the Summer Program in the first year and Summer project every year thereafter is mandatory requirement for renewal of the fellowship. KVPY Fellows who opt out of the science stream at any stage will forfeit the Fellowship and Contingency Grant forthwith. The fellowship for the students selected under the stream SA will be continued after the XII Standard/ (+2) only if they pursue an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) Summer program Summer programs are important parts of the nurture program for KVPY Fellows. These are meant to expose the Fellows to methods of scientific search and inculcate in them an abiding interest in doing scientific research. These are normally organized during the summer vacation, when KVPY Fellows spend one or two weeks in scientific institutions listening to lectures by experts in different fields of Basic Sciences and other related subjects, see things in a research environment, science in action, watch scientists at work, interact with scientists, visit nearby scientific research laboratories and institutions, exchange views and interact with other research students. Sometimes Fellows with specific interest are associated with individual scientists who talk to them about their interest, help them clear their doubts, give them problem to work out, let them do experiments, and tell them about the future scope in the area of their interest. The Summer Program for KVPY Fellows is arranged at Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER) - Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal, and Trivandrum for a week. Other Privileges Each KVPY Fellow will be issued with an Identity card so as to have access to renowned National laboratories/ Universities who have agreed to extend special privileges like library, laboratory facilities to KVPY Fellows on production of the ID card. Our Hope We hope that the award of the Fellowship to student is an encouragement, an opportunity and motivation that they derive from it will expose them to research in the subject of their liking and induce them to choose a research career in Basic Sciences. This would really be a fulfilment of the aim & objective of the KVPY program.
